Jacques Brel Au Public Bergen 1964

1964 encuentra a Brel en el apogeo de su fama y en mayo de ese año, poco después de la muerte de su madre, se anuncia la presentación del cantautor en
‘Het Huis met de Pilaren’ un lugar frecuentado por poetas, pintores y otros artistas.
El propio Jacques también habría estado ‘muy feliz’ con la idea de actuar en un bar de artistas en Bergen. Warrie van Kampen afirma haberlo discutido con Brel en París.

El cantante acababa de llegar de Italia, furioso por lo que le hicieron en Roma: intentaron hacerle sincronizar los labios para hacer “playback” mientras grababa ‘Le plat pays’ en un programa de televisión, cosa que no funcionó y terminó cantando todo en vivo con una guitarra.
Cuando llegó al pueblo de artistas de Holanda Septentrional, se enojó aún más cuando notó que tenía que actuar en un restaurante. Alguno recuerda a Brel vociferando: “… No soy cantante de bar, hace años que no lo soy. Se supone que debo estar en un salón, y luego me traen aquí a la provincia para actuar en una casa de mierda para sordos y viejos…”
Si bien Paul van Beckum escribe que no había rastro de nerviosismo en el rostro de Brel, un hecho menor con un policía de tránsito durante los ensayos no hizo otra cosa que alterar más el temperamento de Brel. Así y todo, Paul van Beckum describe cómo Brel inicia el ensayo con un vaso de cerveza en la mano: “… y se torna explosivo, ante nuestra mirada, dejándonos en claro que estábamos ante la presencia de un gran artista que tiene una alta concepción de su tarea. Con un dinamismo increíble y un temperamento casi aterrador, lanzaba sus canciones. Canciones amargas sobre el amor inalcanzable, sobre la muerte, tema recurrente en sus letras. Azotes en la cara de la sociedad,,,”.

Van Altena recuerda: ‘El restaurante había frito la mantequilla. La asistencia al concierto, de entrada gratuita, estaba vinculada a la compra obligatoria de una cena exclusiva…’: Brel como música de fondo para el lomo de venado asado, ancas de rana y lenguados no parecía ser el mejor entorno de la canciones del belga.
Y más allá de tener que cantar mientras se escuchaba el repiqueteo de platos y cubiertos, todo esto se desvaneció durante los 48 minutos de la presentación.
Mohammed el-Fers, el biógrafo de Amsterdam de Brel cuenta que “…El concierto comenzó con Le dernier repas, seguido por Les fenêtres y Les Toros. Y con el sudor chorreándole por la barbilla, continúa con Les vieux, Mathilde, Le tango funèbre, Les bombons, La Fanette, Les Bourgeois, Jef, Au suivant, Le plat pays, Le Moribond, Les Bigotes y Madeleine sin el más mínimo rastro de irritación, dejando en cada interpretación una versión de intensidad electrizantes…”

Ya concluído este concierto inolvidable, la noche devolvería la furia de Brel, quien, según cuenta la leyenda, al recibir el sobre con su paga de 12.000 florines, lo habría tirado al suelo diciendo que esos “Klotenklappers” – imbéciles – debieran metérselo en culo o bien donarlo a la Cruz Roja. Jojo, su alma gemela y asistente, recogió ese dinero y se puso al volante del auto.

El concierto de Jacques Brel en Bergen el 30 de mayo de 1964 en el restaurante Het Huis Met de Witte Pilaren, fue el último concierto de Jacques Brel en los Países Bajos.

Sonidos saturados provenientes de la grabación original han sido reparados.

Another Memorable Concert in an atmosphere of heightened mood.

Lantower Records launches this UNPUBLISHED CONCERT by Jacques Brel at the bar/ restaurant ‘Het Huis met de Pilaren’ in Bergen, Netherlands, on May 30, 1964.

This Concert was seasoned with tense situations between the singer and the organizers of the event, partly counted by witnesses, and partly by carriers of legends
1964 finds Brel at the height of his fame and in May of that year, shortly after his mother death, the singer-songwriter is announced in ‘Het Huis met de Pilaren’ a place frequented by poets, painters and other artists.
Jacques himself would also have been ‘very happy’ with the idea of performing in an artists’ bar in Bergen. Warrie van Kampen claims to have discussed it with Brel in Paris.
The singer had just arrived from Italy, furious at what they did to him in Rome: they tried to make him lip sync to do “playback” while recording ‘Le plat pays’ on a TV show, which did not work and ended up singing everything live with a guitar.
When he arrived at the artists’ village in North Holland, he became even angrier when he noticed that he had to perform in a restaurant. Someone remembers Brel angry: “… I’m not a bar singer, I haven’t been one for years. I’m supposed to be in a salon, and then I’m brought here to the province to perform in a shitty house for the deaf and old…”
While Paul van Beckum writes that there was no trace of nervousness on Brel’s face, a minor incident with a traffic cop during rehearsals did nothing but further upset Brel’s anger. Paul van Beckum describes how Brel starts the trial with a glass of beer in his hand: “… and suddenly, rehearsing the first song, it becomes explosive before our eyes, making it clear that we were in the presence of a great artist who has a high conception of his task. With incredible dynamism and an almost terrifying temperament, he would release his songs. Bitter songs about unattainable love, about death, recurring theme in his lyrics. Whipping in the face of society,,”.
Van Altena recalls: ‘The restaurant had fried the butter. Attendance at the concert, free of charge, was linked to the compulsory purchase of an exclusive dinner…’: Brel as background music for the roasted venison loin, Frog legs and sole did not seem to be the best setting for the songs of the Belgian artist.
And beyond having to sing while listening to the ringing of plates and cutlery, all this faded during the 48 minutes of the presentation.
Mohammed el-Fers, the biographer of Amsterdam Brel tells that “… the concert began with Le dernier repas, followed by Les fenêtres and Les Toros. And with sweat dripping down his chin, he continues with Les vieux, Mathilde, Le tango fêbre, Les bombons, La Fanette, Les Bourgeois, Jef, Au suivant, Le plat pays, Le Moribond, Les Bigotes and Madeleine without the slightest trace of irritation, leaving in each performance a version of electrifying intensity…”
Already concluded this unforgettable concert, the night would return the fury of Brel, who, according to legend, upon receiving the envelope with his payment of 12,000 florins, would have thrown it to the ground saying that those “Klotenklappers” – assholes – they should stick it up their asses or donate it to the Red Cross. Jojo, his soulmate and assistant, picked up that money and got behind the wheel of the car.
